May 30, 2019 Board Meeting Minutes (DRAFT)

iPRES

The proposal for a workshop at iPRES was accepted! The organizers asked if we could consider for the 3 tutorials/workshop to shorten them to 2 hours and run them on the same day doing the lineup of PREMIS, METS, lunch break, and finishing up with the metadata workshop. We said yes, that will be on Monday September 16th. Next step for iPRES is to schedule and set up the Zoom meeting for all workshop presenters and coordinate from there.

Updating instructions for METS profile registration

This is done. The web page is updated; closed github issue.

Tools page

There is an outdated link to one of the tools. We should review the entire tools list and check all the links. Do we really need to have the tools page? The maintenance is always a problem. We will move it to the wiki on GitHub.

METS overview and translations

Italian and German translations are done.

Karin has asked about the portuguese translation, Jose agreed to update it but it hasn't been done yet. Haven't heard from Bertrand about the French or Spanish ones. Don't know who created the Chinese or Persian translations. The PREMIS Chinese translation was done by a university in Taiwan, but the site for that effort is dead now. Perhaps we should just leave the Chinese translation as old for now. We can send mail to the mailing list and ask if somebody wants to take a look or add a new translation of the overview (or any other info)

We will wait for the French & Spanish translations before posting new ones to the web site.

METS Schema Documentation

  • Will ask Glenn to change label to "METS Schema 1.12 Documentation"

  • Will ask Glenn to move the link to METS Schema 1.9 Documentation down to "old schema versions" and remove the METS Structure Diagram.

  • Will make the change in the schema documentation to change to documentation element.

  • Change comment for "Prepared for" - add a heading to indicate it's the original group doing it and move up the current version.

Can be closed after it's regenerated with that change history visible.

METS Rights schema

Robin attached a possible revision to an email on April 17th. Question is whether the copyright information is appropriate and whether we need to go back to DLF to have them sign off on this. We agreed last time we did not need to do that.

Karin will ask Glenn to move the existing METSRights.xsd aside and put the new one in its place. There are no changes to the actual schema, just the comments. Once it's in place we can close this issue.

XLink issues

At the last meeting, we discussed looking at removing XLink entirely from the METS schema, motivated in part by issues with conflicting XLink schemas when other schemas such as SEDA are used with METS.

Both EAD3 and PREMIS3 no longer use XLink at all, though they have taken slightly different approaches. PREMIS 2 only used the "simple" XLink type, and in PREMIS3 this is replaced with a 'simpleLink' attribute of type 'xs:anyURI'. EAD 2002 had in addition to simple links (ptr, ref, dao, extref) had two elements (daogrp and linkgrp) that could contain extended, arc, and resource links. In EAD3, linkgrp and daogrp and their children are all removed entirely. The simple links retain XLink-modeled attributes (unlike PREMIS3), but put them in the EAD3 namespace.

Aaron drafted a relatively simple and backwards-compatible approach that adds XLink-modeled attributes to the METS namespace while maintaining backwards compatibility with existing documents that use the xlink-namedspaced attributes via <xsd:anyAttribute namespace="##other">: https://github.com/mets/METS-schema/compare/noxlink

However, Aaron wonders if the time is ripe to bring up the question of METS2 / METS-lite and consider removing the extended linking elements altogether.

Karin and Andreas would be prone to agree that the change (however we do it) should be a new major version rather than trying to maintain backwards compatibility.

Perhaps we should have one call trying to figure out what we want to do going forwards in the fall? There was some work done several years ago looking at usage of various attributes in the registered profiles. We will try to dig up that info: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1lQQFN1hEToBwAQiJRsOPG9hKsPW8jcZ_Oyj8Uz8fvJk/edit#gid=683739378

It would be worthwhile to discuss at iPRES and re-bring the discussion in the fall. There have been some discussions about version 2 of METS based on RDF and METS Lite. We should review all that documentation and re-start the discussion.

Housekeeping

Should put out a call for one more member. Can also discuss at the face-to-face meeting.
