How to fill the ELOG

taruggi edited this page Jul 14, 2020 · 11 revisions

PADME logbook can be found at http://padmesrv2.lnf.infn.it:8080/ .

The shifters must fill the ELOG:

  1. at the start of a run
  2. at the end of a run
  3. every time a problem occurs
  4. every time something changes in the setup
  5. at the end of a shift.

The first column in the ELOG main page is called "Logbook": click on "Run" to see the list of information related to the runs.

The homepage of the ELOG

If you want to open an existing entry, you can click on it. You can add an entry using the "New" option, in the top left of the page. Some rules on how to fill the entries are presented in the following.

Rules

Remember that the fastest way of filling an entry in the ELOG is to duplicate an existing entry: you can do that opening an entry of the same kind you want to write, and changing all the information (the "duplicate" command appears at the top when you click on an entry).

The duplicate command.

Run start

Apart from the author name(s), some features of this kind of entry are fixed:

Subsystem: Run

Category: General

Subject: start run_xxxxyyyyzzzz

The Start of run comment, Setup and Type are information coming from the inizialization of the run (as described in Running the DAQ), that you must copy and paste. Any useful extra information can be written at the end of this kind of entry. Please note: the Setup in the start run entry is the setup used in the DAQ, while the "Setup" category in the ELOG is commonly used to take note of changes in the experimental setup.

Run stop

The rules for the run stop are quite similar to the ones for the run start entry. The only difference is that the Category entry can be "General" if the run stops smoothly, while if any accident occurs (i.e. the beam is off, the DAQ is stuck, etc.) Category must be "Problem".

Problems

This is probably one of the most important entries to fill: you must be very clear and specific when writing about a problem, in order to help people keep track of any issue. Most of the time, the problems experienced will be with the LINAC. In any other case, please remember to select the correct subsystem, specifying the run where the issue occurred.

Setup changes

Whenever something is changed in the setup (magnet currents, voltages, detector mechanics,...), we must keep track of the changes: for this reason, please update the ELOG everytime something changes, using the "Setup" category. It may happen that, during a run, we decide not to stop the acquisition before changing setup. In this case, an entry similar to the one in the picture must be filled, in order to keep track of the changes in the setup. It is crucial to write the approximate number of the event where the changes take place.

End of a shift

At the end of a shift, the shifter must briefly summarize what she/he did, and give instructions to the shifter after her/him. In this case, the subsystem "Run target" and the category "Summary" must be used.

What if I wrote something wrong in an entry?

The ELOG allows the editing of the entries up to half an hour after the entry is saved. If more than half an hour has passed, you can select the entry you want to edit and use the "Reply" command to fill an entry connected to the one you want to change. In this case, the reply will appear as in the picture.
