Agenda

  1. Welcome
  2. Review agenda
  3. Secretariat update
    • changes in WMO manuals related to WMO-No.49/ICAO Annex 3
  4. Updates since last meeting (Team)
  5. Discussion on the progress of schema development (Choy)
    • Removal of IWXXM representations involving TAC element "Supplementary information/State of the runway" (#325).
    • Relaxation of TAC constraints on IWXXM (#309).
    • Develop Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation (VONA) by State Volcano Observatories (SVO) (#305)
    • Add information on Quantitative Volcanic Ash (QVA) clouds (#306).
      • Other decision: Proposed new entry to WMOCategoryCode - volcanoForecasts
      • Other decision: Whether it is good to have both iwxxm:ashDensityCategory and iwxxm:ashDensityEqualsOrExceeds as they contain similar information.
    • Questions for WG-MOG on IWXXM VONA and QVACI
  6. Information on WG-MRAD's request to update Table 4678 in WMO No.306 Vol. I.1, and the subsequent need to update the code list and WMO Codes Registry. Do we want to take this opportunity to form a team to review code lists being used by IWXXM?

Notes

  • Anna talked about the impact of Resolution 12 (Cg-19) on IWXXM and recommends replacing all references to WMO-No. 49 in the 2024 release. The team agrees that previous versions of IWXXM should not be updated. Choy noted that the codes registry needs a full review.
  • Choy presented some of the changes based on TAC relaxations (https://github.com/wmo-im/iwxxm/issues/309 and https://github.com/wmo-im/iwxxm/issues/325)
  • Choy presented some options for updating the indicated IWXXM examples. These examples were not coming from Annex 3 but were created to showcase selected representations in IWXXM back in version 1. The team noted that even though these examples may have already served their purpose, it would be useful to keep them either in the examples directory or in the iwxxm-translation repository. We may want to defer the decision until publication of the next version of IWXXM.
  • Choy presented the refactored VONA using the weather object (WxObject) approach (https://github.com/wmo-im/iwxxm/issues/305)
    • all are invited to review and post questions in the comments of issue 305
    • (Choy) it seems similar to METCE but this approach is more flexible
  • Choy presented the QVA approach (https://github.com/wmo-im/iwxxm/issues/306)
  • Choy presented the WG-MRAD's request on the reinstatement of Ice Crystal (IC) in Table 4678 of WMO No.306 Vol. I.1:
    • Choy indicated that two activities may be required, viz:
      • Revive the deleted entry of IC in Table 4678
      • Introduce suitable combinations involving IC in the codes registry under https://codes.wmo.int/306/4678
    • Anna indicated that WMO No.306 Vol. I.1 has been frozen: "Per Resolution 12 (EC-69), 'the status of the Manual on Codes, Volume I.1 shall remain unchanged until such time as the traditional alphanumeric codes are no longer supported for operational exchange by World Weather Watch'"
    • Noting that the code list can be regarded as asset of IWXXM as no one else is using it while Table 4678 is part of FM 15, FM 16 and FM 51, Anna will take a look at how the team can proceed in maintaining the code list derived from Table 4678 without updating the table itself. If this is achievable we may also need to document the discrepancies between the code list and Table 4678 in WMO No.306 Vol. I.3 too
  • Goal is to make schemas available by 9 Oct for team review with a team meeting at the end of October for discussion

Actions

  • All to review updates in the https://github.com/wmo-im/iwxxm/issues within one week, especially in regards to the use of English wording
  • Anna will take a look at how the team can proceed in maintaining the code list derived from Table 4678 without updating the table itself
