- EPA is still using FGDC CSDGM at the EPA portal (the Environmental Dataset Gateway). EPA data stewards are responsible for bringing metadata into the portal.
- NOAA is also using the FGDC CSDGM standard in most of their Geoportal Server implementations. In recent months NOAA has made progress in the area of ISO metadata transition including:
- Developing a NOAA level Policy called the 'NOAA Data Documentation Directive' that addresses NOAA's strategy for the transition of FGDC to ISO metadata.
- An active metadata group within NOAA is spearheading the work with FGDC to develop ISO 19115/19115-2 metadata training materials, hosting ISO metadata online training sessions, and developing specific transforms that apply to different groups and types of data across NOAA.
- NOAA published an ISO Metadata Training schedule and the NOAA National Coastal Data Development Center Metadata Home page provides additional ISO & metadata resources. The NOAA ISO Point of Contact is [email protected].
- Geo.data.gov recently rolled out support for ISO 19115-2.
- NOAA has worked with the community on tools that will validate FGDC over into ISO. If you create perfect FGDC metadata, then it should convert to ISO automatically. There are lots of other editors that can help, as well as templates and workbooks. The editor in Geoportal Server now works with ISO standards. Resources are available online, including a wiki site for sharing information: https://geo-ide.noaa.gov/wiki/index.php?title=ESRI_Geoportal
- NOAA is looking at a master catalog concept to organize all NOAA's geospatial data through its Geoportal Server implementations, federated search capabilities, etc. so that NOAA users would not have to register their metadata in multiple systems/multiple times (i.e. Data.gov, Geo.data.gov, NOAA Data Centers and Geoportals, NOAA GeoPlatform, etc.).
- Geo.data.gov now supports all standards (FGDC, ISO 19115, ISO 19115-2). There is no policy in place that requires ISO uploads.
- The Geo.data.gov team is trying to figure out how to handle large collections of data, e.g. quad sheets that generate thousands of hits. They are using a collection approach where users will be able to refine search within collections. Geoportal server now supports collections.
- EPA Environmental Dataset Gateway (EDG) now offers data download locations, and recently launched a flex-based Clip N Ship application. Both features are available at: https://edg.epa.gov/metadata/catalog/data/data.page
- Geoportal Server
- Released under Apache 2.0
- Available on SourceForge
- 70% of downloads are from outside of the US
- Latest release includes collections support, MySQL, schematron validation, THREDDS harvesting
- Supports configuring your own fields in your metadata.
- Supports facets, which can help refine vocabulary. A new Data.gov vocabulary page is available at http://vocab.data.gov
- New mailing list: [email protected] . Pease submit your feedback.
- Looking to open the code base for non-Esri coders
- For more information, see http://esriurl.com/geoportalserver
- Designed to get NOAA's data in order and eventually feed into Geoplatform.gov.
- Groups are featured front and center. The eight groups mirror NOAA'rategic and mission goals and programs.
- Featured news stories appear on front page.
- Users can stay within the NOAA Geoplatform and search other NOAA catalogs (Geoportal Server sites) from the search results page.
- Stylesheets of other catalog search results match the Geoportal search as well.
- Esri has created user groups and admin roles. Anyone with a NOAA ID can create content and add it to the 'Candidate for Public Content' group.
- NOAA is testing its instance of the geoplatform for one year while monitoring the status and progress of the federal geoplatform.gov site.
