How to join the team
You don't need to ask permission to start commenting, interacting on the issue tracker, submitting pull requests, and anything else that Github will allow you to do! Please make sure you follow the guidelines and strategy so that your efforts fit in with the flow.
The success of Square One depends on having a team of people who are dedicated to maintaining various aspects of the project. When possible, automation is used to simplify everyone's life, but many tasks still require a human. If you think you can fill the roles of a Maintainer (as outlined in the Development Strategy) then consider what you might be able to help with. You don't need to be an expert programmer or master ninja to help, but only by offering can a suitable role be found for you.
