Remove try-except to ensure trace_link stops on exception

Summary

Remove try-except to ensure trace_link stops on exception. With try-except as shown in the main branch, it catches the exception, prints out the error message, and keeps going even if the variables are not updated properly. It should raise an exception and exit. This PR allows raising an exception and stopping.

Test Plan

1. Added a unit test, and CI passes.
