Tampa Twitter SMS Interface

barbeau edited this page Apr 9, 2013 · 9 revisions

Note that while the Twitter SMS interface is free to use, you will incur any normal text messaging fees from your cellular provider.

First, sign up for Twitter and sign in via text message:

  • Sign up for Twitter.com account using the Twitter website (if you don't have one)
  • Log into the Twitter website, and go to the Twitter->Mobile webpage, and follow the directions to add your cell phone number (be sure to enable Text Notifications->Mentions and Replies->From anyone. If you choose Only from people I follow, you'll need to follow @tweetmybus to get SMS notifications)
  • You should now be logged in!

Now, follow these steps every time you want to find out real-time info for your bus:

  • Text your route and stop number to 40404 and include the OBA Twitter handle @tweetmybus in the format @tweetmybus <route number> near <cross streets>. For example: text @tweetmybus 53 near cass st and ashley dr to 40404.

That's it! You should get real-time information in a response that looks like South to HCC/Downtown/MTC is Predicted 11:09:46 AM at Cass St @ Ashley Dr(7196). Next Stop: Main St @ N Boulevard

Troubleshooting

Please check the Twitter via SMS website to make sure you're logged in with your Twitter account properly, and that you've configured your account to get responses to your Tweets via SMS. This Guiding Tech post also has more specific information on this process.

Known Issues

Currently, you can not send an SMS with the @tweetmybus tag to Twitter from a [Google Voice] phone number, due to technical issues with how the text content is handled. You can still tweet from a Twitter mobile app or website and receive the alerts as text messages - you just can't request them via SMS.
