#### quiz

1. What is the purpose of a hygienic retreat?
2. What heals you in darkness?
3. What does this mean you should do with your will and attention?
4. What must you always do when standing or sitting in darkness?
5. Where is a good place to put your attention most of the time?
6. What is the maximum total time per day you should put your attention on your visual field?
7. If a retreat becomes too uncomfortable, what are 4 things you can do to slow it down and keep retreating?
8. How much does a silent location matter for a successful retreat?
9. How much does the air you breathe weigh compared to the food you eat?
10. What does this imply about the importance of continuous fresh air?

#### personal

- Respond simply: 1-3 sentences are usually enough.
- There are no trick questions.

1. What percentage of my book have you read? (Please read everything, though the lists of instructions in the last 3 chapters are optional.)
2. How much would you like to retreat, on a scale of 1-10?
3. What dark retreats have you done or attempted?
4. Why would you like to do a hygienic darkroom retreat rather than another kind?
5. How does the frugivorous menu sound to you?
6. Would you like to maintain silence during your retreat? (You communicate with notes and claps, I talk minimally.)
7. What will you be doing the week after the retreat?
8. What fears or beliefs do you have that might interfere with your retreat, eg, nyctophobia (fear of the dark), claustrophobia? How will you handle them? What special support might you need?
9. What do you think of the idea that the people of our lifeway—and virtually all those touched by us—are psychotic? Assuming it is true, what significant effects of retreating in darkness might you experience in your psyche, for better or worse, and why would you say so?
10. What is your philosophy or religion?
11. What is its significance to you?
12. What substances, prescription or otherwise, do you use? Which ones in the past had much effect?
13. Please add anything else you would like to.

The short version is 168 x 266 x 84 thick. If an even smaller vent is required:

- use thin cardboard and trim the protruding walls

- slide all baffles leftward, maintaining 32 (and 34) spacing
- trim the protruding walls
- use black posterboard for walls instead of cardboard
- shrink the design proportionally
- use my old helix-z vent in the zip file

If the gap is greater than 40, add wood to bottom of door or build up threshold with boards. Or modify the vent's design using its principles. If less than 13, use black paper in place of fleece for the vent baffle, along with black paper over the threshold. If less than 6, consider trimming the bottom of the door. Or find another way to ventilate the room.

Usually, you need to darken it anyway. Either you need a path to a bathroom. Or your supporter need to get in without lighting you up. Cover windows in the hallway. Make a curtain across the hallway with a dark blanket fixed to the walls and ceiling with tape or tacks.

Or make a [removable partition](https://andrewdurham.shutterfly.com/313). It's a wooden frame a little wider than the hallway so it wedges in place at an angle. It has a fleece seal around the frame. It is filled with black plastic sheeting. It is penetrated by ducting or universal vents as needed.

Born 1971, Twin Falls, Idaho.

My family and elders trained me to think and to make things.
My family and elders trained me to think and to make things. I'm a little autistic. I can extrapolate correct analyses from little data.

At 16, [joy overwhelmed me](/conjecture/rapture). It inspired me to investigate its cause full-time for 21 years. I independently studied philosophy, health, and design, interests bequeathed by my parents. I tested my findings while traveling America. I lived outside, with friends and relatives, and in small groups I met. I played music, did odd jobs, and built alternative shelters.

In 2008, I discovered darkness as the means nature provides us to heal from trauma, the cause of our suffering. Out of this came the [*darkness conjecture*](/conjecture/), the concept of the restful use of darkness in support of the self-healing psyche. I began focusing on:
In 2008, I discovered darkness as the means nature provides us to heal from trauma, the cause of our suffering. Out of this came the [*darkness conjecture*](/conjecture/), the concept of the restful use of darkness in support of the self-healing psyche. Since then, I have:

- designing and building darkrooms
- doing and supporting retreats in America, Guatemala, Sweden, Norway, Spain, and Czech Republic
- giving talks and consulting for readers
- refining and documenting my work at [darkroomretreat.com](/).
- designed, built, and upgraded darkrooms (30 in America, Guatemala, Sweden, Norway, Spain, and Czech Republic, consulting on 4 more, all in 4 climates on 4 continents)
- retreated (27 times, from 2-7 days) and supported retreats (30)
- given talks (14) and consulted for readers worldwide
- refined my work, documenting it at [darkroomretreat.com](/)

2013 brought [proof of concept](/report/2x3-day) and a rewriting of the conjecture into this book. Development of the model of hygienic darkroom retreating ended in late 2019. All details of theory, protocol, and design were worked out. It became a practical solution. The phase of application began: bringing the solution to the world.

The [ladder](/format#ladder) is a step toward it, as well as the expansion of my [services](/back/services).
