Rendering of emojis is device and browser dependent (e.g., see the variety of ways the right arrow can render ). Therefore, for consistency in the UX, we should replace all emojis with images/icons instead that are located in the web app repo and will therefore render the same across devices.
For black-and-white icons, the Noun Project is a good place to start. However, be sure to track the designer and URL for all icons you use since we have to credit them.
