@ljharb via Twitter:

“top givers” and “top receivers” totals should only include amounts between peeps that are both in the same group.

Unless im reading this tickrt wrong (posaible) I hold the opposite
philosophy. I think all numbers (totals and itemized) should be public
unless specifically anonymized by the user.

@DamosDaze Yeah I think here we're talking about the community pages, such as:

https://www.gittip.com/for/javascript/

Those top givers could be giving money to people in other communities, but it still puts them on top of any other community they also happen to join.

Oh I see. Good call there. ;)

Exactly - ideally on the homepage, top X is overall, but within a community, it's only to/from inside the community.

I like this; I think it would incentive giving within communities. I think this could have a very positive effect on smaller communities especially.

I've added this to the "Stabilize Communities Feature" milestone. It's not as trivial to solve as #970 and #1316, however.

This is too hard. I'm dropping this from the "Stabilize Communities" milestone.

I also deprioritized from ★★★ to ★★☆.

@whit537 if this hasn't been done yet, then I think there's something wrong with the "top X" modules in a given community - for example, I'm not showing up in the "top givers" in https://www.gittip.com/for/node-js/ although I'm currently giving more than some of the bottom few.

@ljharb That's actually a different issue: We have to estimate the giving/receiving amounts, because we don't know for sure what will happen this week until it happens. To firm up the numbers, we only include tips backed by a credit card in our estimates. I'm not seeing that you have a credit card attached, and that would explain why you're not included in any lists of top givers.

ah, that's what happened. thanks :-)

I still look forward to this eventually getting implemented, but I understand that it's difficult.

We'll get there! :-)

+1 from @mrmuskrat via [email protected].

On the Community pages, the Top Givers should show the total being given to the shown Community instead of the total donations for that user.

Example:
I donate a total of $12.50/week. $10.00/week goes to the Perl Community and $2.50/week goes to the PostgreSQL Community. If I look at either page, I'm listed as giving $12.50/week.

+1 from @loufranco on #2354:

If you look at the top givers and receivers on a community page you find that they are not there because of their ties to that community, but there because of how much they give or receive in total on gittip.

This makes it hard for someone very active in a community to get to the top if the community itself is smaller in comparison to the large ones. Look at

https://www.gittip.com/for/cyclists/

I see members well known for different communities there. A cyclist would be hard pressed to get onto the list.

It's a problem, because if I didn't know better -- and I wanted to support cycling -- I might just pick the top few users and be done with it.

I don't have a good solution -- you don't make givers say which community persona they are giving to, so you actually have no idea which members might be the leaders of a given community.

Perhaps the simplest thing would be to let each user pick 2 or 3 communities they want to be on the leaderboard for.
