The menu bar on the the main page of the Math Editor provides the options to access the following:
- Getting Started - this is an example of a completed problem so that users can get more familiar with the tool's functionalities
- Provide Feedback - Benetech's Math Editor (alpha) is still in development. Please try and share your thoughts about this evolving tool with us!
- Contact Us - if you have any questions or concerns, feel free to email us!
- The main page also provides sample problems as a list, which users can feel free to try. Clicking on one of the problems pops up a modal dialog that allows users to solve the problem using various "show your work" features.
You can explore the contents of the math editor dialog using our header navigation structure:
- H1: Title - this restates the problem
- H2: History and Work Area. The history is where steps are recorded. The work area is where users can enter, manipulate, and explain their math work.
- H3: History section, with each step consisting of three parts:
- H4: the step number
- H4: the math equation
- H4: a user-generated explanation of work applied to the specific step (optional)
- H3: Work Area section, which also includes three sections:
- H4: the input area, which allows users to input math to be entered input area and the textual area to explain your work. There is a microphone button where you can dictate your explanation. Note that you may need to switch between browse mode and input mode in your screen reader when entering/leaving the input area.
- H4: the palettes which can be used for cross outs, calculations, or entering notation such as fractions or special symbols such as a less than or equal sign. The palettes are organized as two lists: a group of buttons for cross outs and calculations and a second group for creating fractions and special characters that are not on a normal keyboard. Note that all palettes have keyboard equivalents that will be read as part of the title of the button.
- H4: a button to create a new step. Any cross outs will be cleaned up and you can start editing a clean version of your current work.
When there is more than one step in the history section, a delete button emerges (header level 4) on the last step. This can be used to remove the step and related items from the history, then redirects the user back to the active work area. After a delete button is used, users also have the option to undo the deletion using the button that appears near the "add step" button; this will allow users to revert accidental deletions.
