Getting text from filemaker

... because copy and paste just isn't cool enough.

TextMate actually provides a command for pulling text in from Cocoa text fields (see the TextMate Manual). However, I have been unable to get that to work.

Method A: QuickCursor (Mac OS X)

Couldn't be easier:

  • Press keyboard shortcut while in FileMaker calculation dialog
  • Temp file opens in TextMate with language pre-selected. Make your changes.
  • Save and close the file. QuickCursor will copy the text back into your FileMaker dialog!

Download QuickCursor ($5 in the Mac App Store).

Method B: Service

With this method, all you have to do is highlight your text, right-click, then select "FileMaker: Send To TextMate". Then your text will be copied into TextMate and saved as a temporary file. The temporary file is nice because saving it prompts TextMate to set the language, and you can easily close the file without bothering with the "Don't you want to save?" prompt.

Just download the attached package and follow the instructions in the READ_ME file.

Send_To_TextMate.zip

Update 9/7/11: The service available for download above no longer depends on the mate command. The mate command is not installed by default, so the service wasn't working for some people. With this new version, you can even customize the file name and behaviors if you know a little shell scripting.
Update 10/24/11: The path and name of files created by this service are now easier to customize.
Update 12/05/11: Changed name of service menu item from TextMate: Open In File to FileMaker: Send To TextMate for uniformity with other services.

Method C: Copy and Paste

C'mon, it isn't that difficult is it?
