What the motivation of the channel distance definition in Eq5?

Sorry to bother you. I have read your paper and also had one question about the form of the distance measure between channels. Despite the effectiveness, it seems the definition of this distance measure is hard to understand why it works? Could the authors give some insights about how the channel distance is designed?
