redesigning the github readme page

I've recently seen that the website was briefly down. I think this project can have a more informative and welcoming readme page on Github.

I'd like to help with that. I thought to ask you here for what information you think is important to include.
surely, the current info (such as the core components, performance, and special thanks) should stay. but I think it can look more inviting and make an alternative landing page to the website.

I'd love to ear your thoughts and I'll draft a sketch based on that later.
