Hi as you know bringing the additional server online was a temporary measure.

We now need to move it to it's proper location. I'm in the process of creating a vserver for it to sit on. This involves moving the original transitionnetwork.org account to a new user account.

Once I've done this I'll update this ticket with the credentials you'll need to put into Beanstalk. We can then push the site to the new vserver, test, and change the DNS over.

Thanks

Sam

Hi Sam,

I've had a chat with Jay, and we would recommend that we wait to do this until after Christmas.

The reason is that whilst what you are suggesting sounds simple, historically anything we have done with Hetzner has always ended up being much more complicated and time consuming than expected, and not without risk.

The site is working well, and what we really don't want to do is to make changes which may destabalise the site in any way before the studio then closes for Christmas, and we are then not there to fix any issues which could arise.

I am actually finishing at Yoke on Wednesday morning, and I know that Jay is not in the office on Thursday/Friday next week so that doesn't leave us much time to make this change safely.

I will make a note in Jay's schedule to pick this up and make arrangements first thing in the New Year.

Many thanks

Ella

@samuk is there any update on this? We can get this done once we have the info

@thisisyoke

@samuk if you could update this issue with the info we will need as and when you get it that would be great

Sam has been trying to download all the appropriate information to shut off the server in question but it seems to be very challenging. He will update you on Tuesday (his next work day) and hopefully you can finish the backend work required to turn off this dev server as per the agreement when we first purchased it for one month. Cheers

Hi @ainsliebeattie just wanted to check if there's been an update on this?

@thisisyoke

It seems Sam has gotten to a bit of a block on this. We have been given the go ahead to do the other issues in the list, so this one is now the one on hold.

The old site has now been moved to http://oldtn.org.dedi2835.your-server.de/

So you are now free to delete/repurpose the old transitionnetwork.org account on 78.47.62.21 and use it as the dev/live environment

@samuk this would take up all of Febs maintenance, are you happy for this to take priority?

Hi Jay

It's all going very well, she's great. Getting some sleep too, so that's pretty much all you can hope for!

Do you know when you'll be able to schedule the move?

Thanks

Sam

Massive congratulation! Just magical! and what a place (github) to celebrate the magic of life hey

All booked in for next Tuesday to do the move. I will take a closer look this week to make sure we have everything clear to do what is needed

@thisisyoke

@samuk @ainsliebeattie we are ready to do this work, but need the login for the new server. We currently only have login for the live site at 78.46.5.122

You said:
"So you are now free to delete/repurpose the old transitionnetwork.org account on 78.47.62.21 and use it as the dev/live environment"

but we dont have the login for this server. Please send it over asap

Hi Jay, You should have the main account details and passwords which allow you to provision new virtual servers.

I've created a new virtual server for you and sent details in email/ SMS.

Thanks

Sam

@thisisyoke

Ok, we have the login now. If I am correct, I think you did all the setup last time and we then just migrated the site to the area you designated. tom will have a look, but we may have to do the same as last time for expediency. Will keep you posted

Ah sorry. I thought i'd sent the SMS after that message, so assumed you'd been trying old credentials.

If that's not working you could use the master account. I'll send details in email/ SMS now.

@thisisyoke

@sam, did you see my message about setting things up? it would be so much quicker for @arhinostorm if you could do the same as last time and get tings set up, so he just has to migrate the wordpress files and the database over. Is this possible?

Hi Jay

Sorry I didn't see a message. Was it via email?

I wouldn't have time to look at it until the end of next week, so would be best if you can do it I think. It would also save any confusion in how things have been set up?

Thanks

Sam

@arhinostorm do you know when you next have work scheduled for us?

We really want to avoid paying another £200 this month for hosting we don't really need.

Thanks

Great stuff, thanks..

@thisisyoke

ok @samuk , we are almost there. Got dev area set up and beanstalk deploying correctly:

http://dev.transitionnetwork.org.dedi2835.your-server.de/

Just uploading all the images now which takes some time. Now deploying to live environment too in a mo.

Hoping that this afternoon we will be able to confirm both dev and live are there for your testing, so when you are ready after that you can switch the DNS.

@thisisyoke
Copy link

@samuk
live site is moved:
http://transitionnetwork.org.dedi2835.your-server.de/

all that needs to happen now is to rename site url from http://transitionnetwork.org.dedi2835.your-server.de/ to http://transitionnetwork.org but when we do that the site will go down until you switch DNS.

Can you check this new live url, and then lets us know when you will aim to switch the dns. we can do our switch earlier, it just measn this site will break until the dns resolves

Hi I can do DNS now, if that works for you?

I've just set up the SSL cert on new site (so you'll get an error for now) https://transitionnetwork.org.dedi2835.your-server.de/

Thanks

Also is the mail forwarding stuff going to work out of the box? Or have you made any changes if any are needed?

Thanks

I'm seeing Used: 3.34 GB of space used on new server vs 6.6 GB on the old server. Can you confirm this is a known issue? Old backup that's not required or similar?

@thisisyoke
Copy link

Just checking about space usage @samuk . All the files moved across and work so I think we are safe to go.

We have no idea about mail forwarding, we did not do anything first time round. this is new to us.

@arhinostorm will change the site url of this new site so it is ready for DNs change. I will confirm here when it is done

Great, ready to press the button..

Maybe email forwarding is the wrong term? Can you confirm We will continue to get email from the site without having to make any changes?

Also I wonder if the space issue could be down to log files?

Nice :)

Only thing I've spotted is that the site is available on both

http://transitionnetwork.org/
&
httpS://transitionnetwork.org/

Would be good to redirect to the httpS://

(It may have been like this before, but I've only just noticed)

@arhinostorm
Copy link

I have fixed this... I just noticed that on both the old site and new site there are no longer any redirects in the htaccess file. Has someone changed this? The htaccess file is not in our code repo, so we don't change it unless you explicitly do it manually, so either someone has removed all the redirects or a wordpress plugin installed more recently has killed them all (probably WP Rocket).

I'm guessing this is no intentional and we want them back in? Do you have a copy of the file from when it was last updated with latest redirects?

samuk commented May 24, 2017

I'm hoping this has been resolved already. @thisisyoke should have the file?

We just created a spreadsheet https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1r7dTn48mUOE8J6Bhu84jJM7xt3_LH6GHvCcxjFxoksg/edit#gid=1634259395

Which you turned into the Htaccess.

Thanks
