@allentiak We never agreed on how translations should be handle. :-( @statkclee translated the lessons to Korean. Some old discussion at swcarpentry/DEPRECATED-lesson-template#229. I also remember some discussion on discuss mailing list where @wking made some suggestions. |

Hi @allentiak. We made an attempt to translate some of the lessons into Spanish a couple of years ago. The main problem is that there is not a simple system to support translations, so pretty much you have to do it manually. At that time, lessons were evolving rapidly and it was hard to keep up. On the other hand, I think it would much easier now that we have a fixed calendar of releases (twice a year). My preference would be to translate the tagged release version once is out and then live with it until the next release. I think after the initial translation (which will take some time), we would just neeed a couple of days every 6 months. Because of the release calendar, I think that it would be easier to maintain than the workshop-template, which needs to be more often. @rgaiacs @k8hertweck @gvwilson how hard would be to provide a traslation of the lesson template, so that we get links, headers, etc... in the new language? I think this could be a good starting point. The second thing to agree would be the system to name the lessons and make them available within the SWC website. This suggestion looks good to me. |

Please left a comment showing that transifex translated the strings that I mentioned on that issue. The secondary issue is Carpentries-ES/board#2. It will make the update of the translation much harder. Again, I'm suggesting that you and @map0logo reconsider the use of transifex. |

Abajo hay un comentario de Raniere, una persona clave en el ámbito de
Software/Data Carpentry de Latinoamérica. El recomienda reconsiderar el uso
de Transifex y sé que en parte lleva razón.
A mi me pone en un dilema, por una lado, como suponía, el uso de Transifex
iba a estimular la participación.
Por un lado, se puede ver en https://github.com/Carpentries-ES/git-novice
que no se ha hecho ninguna traducción directa al repositorio.
Mientras en https://www.transifex.com/carpentries-es/git-novice-es/content/
a excepción de las lecciones 4 y 5 están traducidas casi en su totalidad.
Pero el uso de transifex es complicado y además tiene problemas técnicos,
tengo por ejemplo alrededor de una semana tratando de encontrar el origen
del siguiente error:

He revisado línea por línea el episodio 03 y no he encontrado el problema,
en la ayuda de Transifex no he conseguido nada claro y eso me ha impedido
realizar la sincronización del proyecto de transifex contra el repositorio
de github.
Es un problema contra el motor interno de Transifex, porque si intento
descargar la lección 3 como Zip desde
https://www.transifex.com/carpentries-es/git-novice-es/03-create-md/ el Zip
nunca es generado, lo que si ocurre con los episodios 1 y 2.
El problema, como había adelantado Raniere, es que el soporte de Transifex
para Markdown está inmaduro, y tiene más problemas con estructuras de
Markdown especiales como las que se utilizan en las lecciones (jekyll +
procesamiento con pyYAML).
Otro problema, incluso más importante, es que si la sincronización la hace
una sola persona (como lo estoy haciendo) los cambios quedaran a nombre de
esa persona y quedará oculta la participación individual.
En vista de esto, creo que lo mejor será hacer es dejar de utilizar
transifex y realizar los cambios directamente con github (como recomienda
Raniere), e investigar sobre herramientas de traducción alternativas
https://opensource.com/article/17/6/open-source-localization-tools que no
introduzcan mayor complejidad.
De ser así tocaría mover las traducciones hechas en transifex a github, es
relativamente sencillo, se descarga el ZIP del recurso, se copia el archivo
traducido (por ejemplo, 08-collab.md) dentro de la carpeta _episodes_es y
cada quien va haciendo commit y push. En el caso del episodio problemático
hay que hacerlo mediante copy & paste ya que el ZIP no se descarga, igual
si sucede con otro episodio.

Hello,
I am preparing a Spanish version of this lesson. Even if (for now) it would only be a partial version, I would like to share it. However, I don't know how.
Would you please advise me on how to do it? Should I create all my files under an "es" folder, or something like that?
