when i tried to download overlunky my computer said it was a dangerous file then i had ignored it because i had thought it was a safe trustworthy site after that it said it detected a virus and didn't let me install it

its good that your computer didnt allow to run the program, mine said there was a file in it called 'trojan_' aka a trojan horse virus, try downloading an older version and see if that works.

This is an open source project, the "WHIP Build" is even build by the github workflow. So if you downloading it from github it's kind of bold statement to call i a virus, unless you can prove it actually is.

As for the warning itself: this is very common thing, reported many times on the community discord. Most likely false positive, as the overlunky inject dll into a running game process which may seam by the anti virus as a threat.

It is possible to send request to Microsoft to mark it as safe (which most of the time they do without issue). But no one really wants to sit and report every new build to them, since it's more of their fault for marking everything as threat.
