I know that there have been problems with the openssl binary, but the most recent release of kobohack-j[1] which can be simply installed by copying two times a file to the kobo reader also ships a new openssl binary
[root@(none) ~]# openssl
OpenSSL> version
OpenSSL 1.0.1e 11 Feb 2013
OpenSSL>
So I guess it should be possible to get this plugin up-to-date to the current firmware. I have not tried by now, but I will try soon.
I have written down installation instruction for that in my blog[2][3], all Kobo related articles are to be found in [4].
