Softvolume in alsa

I have an Allo DigiOne sound card on my raspberry pi, I am trying to figure out how I can get software volume control to work for spotify. For music playing from raudio the volume control works out of the box. But for spotify it just outputs at max volume and the volume control does nothing.

I have tried editing /etc/asound.conf and adding a software volume control, but the config gets reverted on reboot and doesn't seem to bite. Any advice for how I may go about getting volume control for spotify working?

Or better yet, I have a minidsp connect by usb that I can control from commandline to set volume, if I could make it so the volume control in raudio/spotify is connect to that it would be awesome.

Connecting with ssh and running:
spotifyd -v softvol
The volume control from spotify works! But it doesn't sync with rAudio unfortunately.
