Likely it'll be Google Analytics, or at the least Google Analytics and Motomo (or some other FOSS option) but we need event-level tracking to understand, among other things, which facet dismiss icon is being clicked (there are other javascript-y things too of course)

UPDATE 7/29/19:

Here's a list of things that @ruthtillman and I brainstormed on back in early July

  • how many terms entered and which number link was clicked (or paged, or exited)
  • challenge is the intent of the search. examine common search terms for identifying types of uses and uses these to gauge success rates
  • cant find something: when does it happen and what do they do
  • Start Over (as an event)
  • Advanced Search complexity
  • When do facets get applied
  • When do new terms get added/modified
  • What gets clicked on the homepage
  • Track external link clicks
  • When do people click on Classic Cat
  • Clicks on holding/availability from search results (and from doc view)
  • What is getting clicked in the hierarchical facets on record page, what level are users going to
  • What's getting clicked in document toolbar
  • Prv/next
  • How do people return to home (which method)

Leaving this in backlog -- as we implement Matomo elsewhere, let's consider what we might do here.
