Adding optional federation / interoperability to pH7 instances

Are there plans to add optional federation/interoperability features to pH7 instances? This could allow different pH7 communities to connect and interact, while remaining optional and customizable to align with specific themes or interests (or minimum moderation requirements). Such a feature could significantly enhance the network effect and solve the Metcalfe law conundruum, especially in dating scenarios, as users would have access to a wider pool of potential matches.
