Getting started instructions failure

When running this project in dev environment, as described in README.md, I am getting the following error:

Looks like the project requires a firebase API key, even in dev environment. You clearly can't share the API key publicly. However, this project prevents new developers from joining (especially external contributors). Ideally, the project should be designed such that it does not require a connection to your production/test database for development purposes.
