Committees
To those hearing about this for the first time, this is an initiative to involve non-board members in the decision-making of the CSBA, through committees. We believe this will enhance the engagement in CSBA immensely, invite more diversity of thoughts and increase the pool of helping hands. This will be an excellent stepping stone for students who are interested in working in a leadership position in the CSBA next year.
The Need for this Initiative
Growth of CSB
CSB is a highly sought-after major, with an ever-increasing number of students becoming a part of our community every year, and there is little chance the growth rate of CSB will decrease. At present, there are 260+ CSB students. It is difficult to make sure everyone’s needs are addressed by a small group of leaders. It is reasonable to increase the number of students engaging in CSBA decision-making as the population grows. This boosts the diversity of ideas and resources pooled by all.
Better Event Planning
With the growth in numbers, we expect more people to attend and this requires complex event planning, like food, venue, and collaboration with other boards. It would be great to form committees because many students have resources and contacts in a particular field which could be useful while planning events. Hence, it is to involve more students in planning successful events.
The First-Year Spark
First-year students are always excited to meet new people, have social events, get involved with the community and make CSBA a home. We should harness that energy, that spark, that proactive students bring in by providing them with this opportunity to make compelling contributions. These past FYR elections illustrated that many students were excited to work for CSBA and had some amazing ideas for the betterment of all. We should give them a chance to find solutions to problems faced by many and facilitate the implementation of those solutions.
Hands-on Mentoring Opportunity
By working closely with the current E-board members, underclassmen will learn a lot about leadership and operations. This will increase the engagement between upperclassmen and underclassmen, and make resources more accessible. We hope that this mentoring opportunity is beneficial for all.
Faculty Consensus
The faculty strongly agrees with the need to pursue this plan. CSBA is a student-run recognition that receives considerable funding through our directors. Adrian also discussed this with Andrea, who supports this plan, and conveys that the other faculty members support it too.
Overall, we think this initiative is an excellent way to encourage individual excellence and communal growth simultaneously.
What Will This Look Like?
We have formed 5 committees that we believe cover all important areas of CSBA:
The first 3 committees are self-explanatory. The communications committee is the newsletter led by Juhi, and the Resources committee is graphic design chaired by Carl. We expect there to be 2-5 people per committee, mostly underclassmen aspiring to take on the role that they are in the committee for, with a maximum of 2 committees per student.
With the successful implementation of this plan, there should be sufficient ability in the CSBA to generate and implement ideas, host and manage large-scale events, and foster a great learning and growth environment in the CSBA. Any further discussion or ideas can be done here, sent to me personally, or shared at the next board meeting.
