A Canadian bioacoustic expert noticed during the v3 launch that the hydrophone icons on the dynamic map do not accurately depict how sound is received by underwater microphones. He pointed out that the current icon evokes an underwater sound source (aka speaker) because of the way the sound waves are radiating outward from the central element:
Proposed solutions:
Reverse the sound waves so they are approaching the central hydrophone (aka element or sensor)
Make the icon look more like a microphone being dangled vertically in the water.
For number 2, some of the existing icons in the orca-branding assets folder could work if flipped vertically, or be good sources of inspiration. Or maybe folks can offer sketches of other concepts/ideas as alternative solutions below?

Yesterday, John Boyd on the Whale Sightings in the San Juan Islands Facebook page suggested a version of the hydrophone icon that would indicate for users of the live-listening web app that the hydrophone was "inoperable." The main goal would be to show listeners where there are actively-maintained hydrophones that are currently streaming live data versus NOT streaming live data.
In today's standup we discussed how moderators or future algorithms might utilize such an icon to change keep the status of the hydrophone and streaming computer at each node up to date.
Ideally, from a moderator's perspective there might be three types of "inoperability" --
Hydrophone or cable is broken and needs maintenance or replacement
Streaming computer is offline, indicating that the node has lost Internet access and/or power
The AI is no longer listening (i.e. OrcaHello pulse indicator)
@paulcretu Here's a hydrophone icon enhancement issue from orca-branding repo that I mapped into this project. Annoyingly, when I search within orcasite issues, it doesn't come up, whereas if I search in this Project (e.g. with no filters), it does.
That search behavior makes it tricky to assess if there is an issue relevant to orcasite, e.g. if you are considering opening a new issue regarding enhanced hydrophone icons... (This morning during the stand-up, I knew I had done it, but couldn't remember where... so failed to bring it up efficiently during our discussion. This afternoon I found it in orca-branding issues!)
