What were you trying to do?

When I launch the example app, it just gives me a black screen. I can still press the buttons for flash and for swap but the flash does not work either and the swap does not remove the black screen.(I don't have this problem with version 2.13, only with 2.14).

It seems that I have the permissions and I have no error message, just a black screen on my phone with the buttons. I tried this #879 too but it the same.

I'm starting to wonder if this is a bug with 2.14 ? I have gone through the issues and everyone seems to have errors with the black screen.

Any idea ?
Thanks

Hey, thanks for your issue report!

Problem

Back in 2021 I developed VisionCamera around iOS' native device / format API. This Swift API is really flexible and allows you to get a list of all devices, and each device has a list of all supported formats. That's exactly how VisionCamera exposes it to JavaScript as well.

On Android however, I use CameraX. CameraX is the new recommended native camera library for Android. It does a lot of abstractions already, and while it's possible to get a list of all camera devices (front, back, wide angle, ..), it doesn't tell you which format is supported on which device. There's no such thing as "formats" in CameraX, you kinda just tell CameraX what resolution you want to record in, and it tries to match that as good as it can. All of the filtering is done internally then.

This sucks, because that's the same abstraction that I built using VisionCamera, and now it's not really possible to expose a list of formats through JavaScript, since I kinda have to make them up and just guess that it works, this is done here:

// TODO: This uses the Camera2 API to list all characteristics of a camera device and therefore doesn't work with Camera1. Find a way to use CameraX for this

Solution

I've been thinking about this for a long time now. I want to fix this issue once and for all with VisionCamera v3.

V3 has these features planned:

  1. Will be a Fabric/TurboModule only. Legacy architecture will not be supported for the sake of simplicity (will fix a ton of build errors)
  2. Write-back frame processors (draw on frame using RN Skia, draw face masks, filters, overlays, color shadings, shaders, Metal, etc..)
  3. Completely redesigned API for device/format selection (resolution, fps, low-light, ...)

I will brainstorm with @thomas-coldwell in our Vienna Margelo office to think about how we can achieve a perfect API redesign that works on both iOS and Android without compromising too much of the flexibility that we have today.
This means, the new API should still allow things like:

  • Control exactly how much FPS you want to record in
  • Know exactly if a desired format is supported and be able to fall back to a different one
  • Control the exact resolution and know what is supported (e.g. higher than 1080, but no higher than 4k, ...)
  • Control settings like low-light mode, compression, recording format H.264 or H.265, etc.

For this we need a lot of time though.

If you (or your company) is interested in financially supporting those efforts, please let me know. Without sponsorship we can't work on this.

Btw., V3 discussion is here: #1376

Try this android:hardwareAccelerated="false" in AndroidManifest.xml makes the camera no longer display. Check your AndroidManifest and set it back to true may help the camera work again.

Hey! I've rewritten the entire Android codebase of VisionCamera from CameraX to Camera2 in the efforts of ✨ VisionCamera V3.

I just now completed the Camera2 rewrite and I believe the core structure is running, but there might be some edge cases to iron out. Can you try and test the PR #1674 for me to see if you can still reproduce this issue here?

Here's an instruction on how you can test that: #1674 (comment)

If the issue cannot be reproduced with that version/PR anymore, then hoorayy, I fixed it! 🎉
Otherwise please let me know and I'll keep this issue open to keep track of it.

Thank you!

## Breaking Changes

* Frame Processors are now **synchronous**. Previously they ran on a
separate Thread. If you want to run something on a separate Thread now,
use `runAsync` inside a Frame Processor
* Frame Processor Plugins are no longer in the global object with the
`__` prefix, but rather stored directly in the `FrameProcessorPlugins`
object exported by react-native-vision-camera. (e.g. replace
`__scanQRCodes(frame)` with `FrameProcessorPlugins.scanQRCodes(frame)`)
* `frameProcessorFps` no longer exists. Use `runAtTargetFps` inside a
Frame Processor to throttle some calls.
* `onFrameProcessorPerformanceSuggestionAvailable` no longer exists. Use
the FPS display (`enableFpsGraph={true}`) to see how your Frame
Processor performs over time. This is more in-line with how React Native
works (Dev Tools / Perf Monitor)
* VisionCamera V3 will not work on RN 0.70 or below. You need to use RN
0.71. This is because the build script got way simpler and smaller,
making it faster to build and way less error prone. Backwards
compatibility is just too complex here.
* Reanimated is no longer used as a Worklet Runtime. Instead,
VisionCamera now uses
[react-native-worklets-core](https://github.com/margelo/react-native-worklets-core).

## Progress

You can test the latest V3 release by creating a new RN project with RN
0.71 and installing VisionCamera + RNWorklets:

```sh
yarn add [email protected]
yarn add react-native-worklets-core
yarn add @shopify/react-native-skia
```

Things to test:

* TensorFlow Lite plugin to load any `.tflite` model!! ✨ (see [this PR
for more
info](mrousavy/react-native-vision-camera#1633),
will be a separate library soon)
* Drawing onto a Frame using Skia!! 🎉
* Using `frame.toArrayBuffer()` to get the Frame's byte content in JS
* New Android build script. This should drastically speed up the build
time! 💨
* New Worklet library. This replaces Reanimated Worklets. Should be
faster and more stable :)
* New synchronous Frame Processors. Should be faster :)
* `runAtTargetFps` and `runAsync` in Frame Processors
* Using HostObjects or HostFunctions (like models from PyTorch) inside a
Frame Processor. This will probably require a few native bindings on
PyTorch's end to make the integration work (cc @raedle)

Overall V3 is close to completion. I have a few things to do the coming
days so not sure how much work I can put into this. **If anyone wants to
support the development of v3, I'd appreciate donations / sponsors:
https://github.com/sponsors/mrousavy** ❤️ :)

## Breaking Changes

* Frame Processors are now **synchronous**. Previously they ran on a

* Frame Processor Plugins are no longer in the global object with the
`__` prefix, but rather stored directly in the `FrameProcessorPlugins`
object exported by react-native-vision-camera. (e.g. replace
`__scanQRCodes(frame)` with `FrameProcessorPlugins.scanQRCodes(frame)`)
* `frameProcessorFps` no longer exists. Use `runAtTargetFps` inside a
Frame Processor to throttle some calls.

## Progress

You can test the latest V3 release by creating a new RN project with RN

```sh
yarn add @shopify/react-native-skia
```

Things to test:

* TensorFlow Lite plugin to load any `.tflite` model!! ✨ (see [this PR

info](mrousavy/react-native-vision-camera#1633),
will be a separate library soon)
* Drawing onto a Frame using Skia!! 🎉
* Using `frame.toArrayBuffer()` to get the Frame's byte content in JS
* New Android build script. This should drastically speed up the build
time! 💨
* New Worklet library. This replaces Reanimated Worklets. Should be
faster and more stable :)
* New synchronous Frame Processors. Should be faster :)
* `runAtTargetFps` and `runAsync` in Frame Processors
* Using HostObjects or HostFunctions (like models from PyTorch) inside a
Frame Processor. This will probably require a few native bindings on
PyTorch's end to make the integration work (cc @raedle)
