Ubuntu 24.04.1 crashes (closes automatically) when I try to open it everytime #12496

Repro Steps

Ubuntu 24.04 closes automatically when I try to open it in normal mode, however it works fine when I try to open as Administrator. I am using Windows 11 Pro 26100.2894 on my device.

"wsl.exe - Application Error
The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000142).
Click OK to close the application."

I get the above error message when the application is auto closing every time.

Expected Behavior

Ubuntu 24.04 should open and work fine without getting closed automatically in normal mode as well.

Actual Behavior

Ubuntu 24.04 closes automatically when I try to open it in normal mode, however it works fine when I try to open as Administrator.

How to collect WSL logs

Download and execute collect-wsl-logs.ps1 in an administrative powershell prompt:

Invoke-WebRequest -UseBasicParsing "https://raw.githubusercontent.com/microsoft/WSL/master/diagnostics/collect-wsl-logs.ps1" -OutFile collect-wsl-logs.ps1
Set-ExecutionPolicy Bypass -Scope Process -Force
.\collect-wsl-logs.ps1

The script will output the path of the log file once done.

If this is a networking issue, please use collect-networking-logs.ps1, following the instructions here

Once completed please upload the output files to this Github issue.

Thank you for reporting this @Allagisid. This might be because your WSL installation is corrupted. Can you try to reinstall WSL and see if that solves the issue ?

Okay, are the logs been analyzed ? Or the above update is based on assumption. Please elaborate.

I uninstalled WSL and disabled Virtual machine platform and WSL from Control panel. Re-enabled the same from control panel. Reinstalled using wsl --install from elevated command prompt and still the issue persists of closing automatically.
