What are los-opinionated-git-tools?

This is a collection of aliases and "git commands" you may want to place in your ~/bin/ directory, to aid your day-to-day interaction with Git.

I've used these ones for a long time, both at home and at my current workplace.

Some aliases and scripts "just" need /bin/bash; others need perl installed in the system. Some of them should be rewritten to use just /bin/bash. Patches welcome.

Some of them have been created while working at The Register (Situation Publishing LTD), and they kindly agreed to have me release them under a permissive (BSD) license. So,

ALIASES

These aliases will be installed if you launch:

./setup-add-gitconfig-aliases 1

git s    - a quick and easy status for added and modified files only
git ss   - just "status -s"
git co   - alias for "checkout"
git cb   - alias for "checkout -b"
git fa   - alias for "fetch --verbose --all"
git pr   - alias for "pull --rebase"
git prom - alias for "pull --rebase origin master"
git fcm  - alias for "file-changed-from master"
git ya   - shows the "youngest ancestor" between this and the given branch
git lf   - shows a full log of changes from master
git lf   - shows a full log of changes from origin/master
git ll   - shows a short log of changes from master
git llo  - shows a short log of changes from origin/master

It's recommended you run ./setup-add-gitconfig-aliases with no parameters, to see which (if any) aliases of yours would be wiped by installing the new aliases.

The code which does this may be clunky, so use at your own risk!

COMMANDS

These are the commands which will be installed to your ~/bin/ when doing a make install:

git-main

Prints the "main"/"primary" branch of the repository, preferring the following names (in order):

  • blead, used by Perl
  • main, which is soon going to become the new default branch
  • master, the current/old default branch name

This command forms the base for various aliases which used to take master as a default argument, and helps reusing the same aliases/scripts regardless of how the "primary" branch is named.

git-com

Switch to the "main"/"primary" branch of the repository, using git-main.

git-changefile

For each local branch, shows the differences between that branch's file and this branch's, if there are any. Written in Perl.

$ git changefile path/to/file

git-dump

With no arguments, "toggles" renaming the current branch from branchname to DUMP/branchname or back. If given an argument, it toggles it from branchname to REVIEW/branchname or back. Written in Perl.

[DUMP/mf/foo] $ git dump
[mf/foo] $ git dump 1
[REVIEW/mf/foo] $ git dump
[mf/foo] $

git-llb

Shows a list of commits (in git lls style) for a given branch, only looking at the commits between the branch's merge-base with master and the branch's tip.

git-files-changed-from

Shows a list of files which were added or changed in the current branch, compared to a given branch, or master.

[mf/foo] $ git files-changed-from   # defaults to "master"
path/to/foo
path/to/bar

[mf/foo/bar] $ git files-changed-from mf/foo
path/to/foo2
path/to/bar2

git-reauthor

Change the author of the current commit to one from the current repo's log.

Fails if it can't find such an author, or if the given parameter matches more than one author. Uses git log and the mailmap file behind the scenes.

$ git reauthor Marco

git-rr

To be used within Vim, inside the text shown by git rebase --interactive FOO. Visually select the various pick lines, and :'<,'>!git-rr FOO on them. It will replace those commit lines with the same commit line, followed by the list of files which were changed/added/deleted by that commit. This aids when going through a list of commits to find which commits should be squashed or fixup'd where, based on which files were changed. Mnemonic: "Rebase Right".

:!git rr FOO            # replace lines with output of script

... or use the configuration found at the end of the git-rr code, which runs something like that automatically, and should pick up the branch name as well.

git-show-missing-commits

Given two branches, shows which commits "are the same" or differ between these two branches' tips, and their common ancestor. Useful for branch review. Output is in a diff-like format, just for commit identifications rather than code changes.

git-upstream

Prints what the local branch considers to be "upstream".

[master] $ git upstream
origin/master

Useful in more convoluted commands, like:

$ git diff $( git upstream )

git-vifcf

Launches "vi" on the list of files which were changed from the branch given (defaults to "master"). Mnemonic: "VI the Files Changed From"

[foo] $ git vifcf
# now inside vim, one buffer per file changed from "master"

[foo/bar] $ git vifcf foo
# now inside vim, one buffer per file changed from "foo"

git-fixup

Aids "fixing up" commits, in some specific cases. This is a quite complicated, and very opinionated script. Use at your risk.

Case A: You're "reviewing" a branch, and are preparing one huge commit in which you'll stash all your review notes and comments. You commit one change once, and note down its SHA. Subsequently, you do:

[foobar] $ git add foo bar; git fixup SHA

The above will commit the two files and add a commit telling the script to automatically "fixup" it into the given SHA commit. It will also launch the rebase and do the automatic fixup. If you don't want the automatic rebase to be performed, you simply use the --no-auto option and eventually the -f option to actually perform the automatic rebase.

[foobar] $ git add foo; git fixup --no-auto SHA
# commit done, no rebase happened
[foobar] $ git add bar; git fixup --no-auto SHA
# commit done, no rebase happened
[foobar] $ git fixup -f
# automatic rebase/fixup behind the scenes

Case B: You're code-code-code-ing on a branch and notice you screwed up something in an earlier commit. Luckily, you know you screwed it up on the last commit to touch that file. You want the current change to be fixed up automatically to that last commit. You can use --no-auto if you want to continue working without having the automatic rebase happen behind the scenes:

$ echo -e'package foobar;\nsub new {}\n' > foobar.pm
$ git add foobar.pm ; git commit foobar.pm -m 'Add foobar.pm'
$ # code code code on other files, *not* foobar.pm
$ # oh damn forgot the "1;" at the end of foobar.pm
$ echo -e'\n1;\n' >> foobar.pm     # this fixes it
$ git fixup --no-auto foobar.pm
$ # continue working on other things, and eventually:
$ git fixup -f         # do the automatic rebase thing

Why the silly name?

Some of the tools were thought of and created whilst working at "El Reg".
