The README doesn't say that this mod is for varnish 3.

Varnish modules (VMODs) are only available from Varnish 3.0 and on. So by definition this is not available in earlier versions.

It is now issue #4 and has been sent as a pull request patch. Should also be added to the overview on: http://varnish.org/vmods
