Light mode sometimes flashes dark mode on page load

I think it happens if your system preferences say dark, but you've chosen light on the website. so you get a quick flash of black on page load and it's a bit jarring.

can we get the browser to wait till it's settled on what mode to display before painting the page?

or maybe the correct background color fades in somehow, inside of a sudden change from black to white?
