Custom drag preview overlay

By default the drag preview only snaps to cells/days.

Has anyone been able to, or is there a way, to implement a (custom) drag preview "overlay" where it follows the cursor on dragging while the preview of where it will be dropped is still snapped to the date that is being hovered over?
