Hello there, one thing I have always missed in Jellyfin is the addition of a watchlist as this is pretty common if you look at major streaming services. I am aware that a dedicated feature like this still isn’t implemented. However I came up with this idea/shortcut for making a good looking watchlist by using a playlist.
To explain how this works: on the item page, there will be an new watchlist icon which you can press. (It would also be great if this icon would come up when you hover over an item card) Then it turns into another color (I chose yellow for an example as the heart button turns red). Then the item will be added to a playlist named e.g.: Watchlist by UserName. This way we can create a watchlist for each user on the server by checking for the watchlist name and the username. If there isn’t already a playlist named like that one, a new playlist will be created. The next items you want to add will be added to that playlist. If someone removes the item from the ‘watchlist’, it will also be removed for the watchlist-playlist. This will make for a much easier way to create a watchlist with the features that are already there. Without having to manually add and remove every single movie like that. I think it would also be nice to choose which playlist would be used as a watchlist in the settings in case people already made a watchlist without needing to rename this. Although you could also let the user rename the playlist by himself to e.g. Watchlist by UserName so this shows up correctly. I hope I explained the way how this would work properly.
This will also introduce a watchlist tab in the sidebar. When clicked on this, you would firstly see a continue watching section. Most watchlists in other services don’t have this, but I think this is really useful for when you are already watching something from your watchlist. Look at a series for example, instead of needing to go to that series and then clicking the next episode you can just continue watching right away.
Underneath that it would show you the content based on the latest added first all the way to the first added. This is also done in other services. Then I would have different tabs to filter between movies, shows and books.
Books aren’t totally logical in a ‘watch’list but you could also have users who want a reading list if the e-reader is implemented the future. I don’t really see the logic for a music watchlist and that is why I didn’t include a tab for that.
Then again, you can filter and sort like in the other libraries.
In the top right you can see an add button so you can add content to the watchlist. I don’t know how this would look, maybe something like a search bar appears and the content you click automatically gets added. Or you get recommended content which you can add.
Then you have a random button which works the same way as the shuffle does in the playlist feature. You could also integrate this with the feat/up next designs in link so it can play the next content in the shuffle mode.
I also think that it would be useful if the was a remove watched button, as I could people see forgetting about it. It wouldn’t have to be there all the time, maybe only when you’ve watched an x amount of content but didn’t remove it from the watchlist so it doesn’t get crowded with stuff you’ve already watched.
I think that that was everything I had to say. I hear a lot of friends and family (me included) wanting a watchlist and I think this would be the best way to do it. So the idea is to pick one playlist with a special name that would be shown and function as a watchlist. The watchlist button would do in one step which a user would have to do in multiple and my users really miss out on this feature.
I hope you like it ;)
