Above the 3d view, next to the View tab maybe its possible to add some sort of Play/Pause/Stop button to stop the current simulation.

Either as Tabs (to not add a separate toolbar for the 3d window, to not break the overall look and feel) or context menu, or those buttons as tabs next to View or even align them to the right somewhere (as tabs)
