So I feel like the panning could still be improved and I think the most natural would be
if during panning the mouse is "attached" to the surface of the globe as if using the hand to spin an actual globe. Would this be difficult to realize?

Not a big fan of the panning either and would agree with the idea to make it feel like acutally spinning a globe. Not sure how to achieve it though...will have to think about it for a while.
Sorry for the late answer by the way...the notification emails got drowned in the about 2 dozen glfw related emails I reveice from github^^
