Current behavior

The Documentation link displays as a standalone link in the right hand tools section. If it is an HTML file or link, it will display in the browser. Otherwise, it will download. This feature was initially added to GeoBlacklight with the assumption that it would be a downloadable ZIP file (NYU's practice).

I have used this link to generally supply "supplemental documentation." It is not standardized in any way.

Desired behavior

For selected datasets in the geodata pilot, I am making small tables that define the fields. I would like users to be able to:

  1. find and intuitively understand the link's label. In GIS, this is generally called "Attribute Table Definitions". In Europe, it is called "Feature catalogue". In other disciplines, it is called "Data Dictionary" or "Codebook".
  2. display the info in the browser. I can make the tables as CSV, Markdown, HTML, XML or whatever.

This could be a tab in the Metadata preview window.

Considerations

  • Is http://lccn.loc.gov/sh85035852 still the most appropriate URI for this reference?
  • what file format will render as well as be readable when downloaded?
  • Although I am leaning towards simple CSV tables, I could also create ISO 19110 files (XML docs), which serve the same purpose.
  • I can only add one of these to each item. Should it be multiple?
