With #509 we can have optional and alternative steps in the pipeline which are resolved automatically on request. Although we consider #484 an improvement it would be nice to keep both reconstruction algorithms (legacy and new) for future comparison as alternative reconstruct steps.
A current challenge would be to allow the tests to run for both reconstructions (in the adapted form) without too much redundancy.
