Creating landuse timeseries for 50 pfts

1. Why current ELM tools cannot be used for timeseries for 50 pfts?

  • ELM landuse timeseries is created by converting LUH2 data to LUH1 format.
  • The five LUH2 crop categories (c3ann, c4ann, c3per, c4per, and c3nfx) are condensed into a single cropland category for LUH1.
  • The Land Use Translator (LUT) then converts cropland into a single PFT.
  • We currently don't have the options to develop landuse timeseries for ELM's 36 different crop types.

2. Steps used for generating ELM landuse timeseries for 50 pfts

  • Therefore, I used the following steps to create landuse timeseries for 36 different crop types used in ELM:
    • Created landuse timeseries for the historical or future period using mksurfdata tool. This dataset had 17 pfts.
    • Then added timeseries data for additional pfts from NCAR generated landuse timeseries with 78pfts.

3. Name and location generated landuse timeseries

The following landuse timeseries files were generated and saved on compy (/compyfs/inputdata/lnd/clm2/surfdata_map):

  • Historical:
    • ELM old lu ts: landuse.timeseries_0.9x1.25_HIST_simyr1850-2015_c201021.nc
    • NCAR lu ts: landuse.timeseries_0.9x1.25_hist_78pfts_simyr1850-2015_c170428.nc
    • ELM modified lu ts: 'landuse.timeseries_0.9x1.25_HIST_50pfts_simyr1850-2015_c220706.nc`
  • SSP1-RCP26:
    • ELM old lu ts: landuse.timeseries_0.9x1.25_SSP1_RCP26_simyr2015-2100_c220701.nc

  • SSP2-RCP45:
