I wonder if we could put brief release notes on the opening menu (perhaps at the bottom, to the left of the Cancel button) to flag major things we know are wrong.

In this case, I'd imagine we might say something like: Release v. 0998 (if numbering is feasible) -- major fixes in progress: keyword button; mini note editor; note styling

The idea would be both to warn people and to reduce the number of issues we get logged about things we know about.

Is this a bad idea?

It's not a bad idea.
We should at the very least include the version number and a link to the release, which lists the features and fixes for that release.
