You can follow the below steps to change root password;

• mysql --version
• sudo systemctl stop mysql
• sudo systemctl stop mariadb
• sudo mysqld_safe --skip-grant-tables --skip-networking &
• mysql -u root
• FLUSH PRIVILEGES;
• ALTER USER 'root'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'new_password';
• SET PASSWORD FOR 'root'@'localhost' = PASSWORD('new_password');
• UPDATE mysql.user SET authentication_string = PASSWORD('new_password') WHERE User = 'root' AND Host = 'localhost';
• sudo systemctl start mysql
• sudo systemctl start mariadb
