This is a narrative outlining the steps we might go through in order
to solve this first cipher. It will hopefully give you
an idea of the sort of work and steps that you may go through in analyzing a cipher.\vsp{10}
We begin with a basic frequency analysis, counting how many times
each character appears, and find that ``C'', ``V'', and ``H'' are
most common. This leads us to guess that \bc C=e, V=t, and H=a\ec
since ``e'', ``t'', and ``a'' are the three most common letters in
English.
Next we look for repeated strings of characters. We find, among
others, that ``VGC'' appeared very frequently. Based on what we did
before this would be ``t\_e'' and so it appears that \bc G=h. \ec
The next step is a digraph analysis, that is we look at two
letter combinations. We find that ``CR''=``e\_'' and
``RC''=``\_e'' are very common and comparing this to the
table of common digraphs we guess that \bc R=r. \ec

We also find that ``VH'' which is
``ta'' was more common than it should be and thus one of our
previous letter assignments is perhaps wrong. Going back to our
repeated strings we find ``VGHT'' in a couple of places and when we
look at common words starting with ``th'' that could fit in for
``VGHT'' the only one that really works is ``this.'' Therefore \bc
H$\neq$a, H=i, and T=s.\ec Finally, the digraph ``CM''=``e\_'' is
very frequent so should represent either ``er'' or ``en.'' Since,
``er''=``CR'' we conclude that \bc M=n \ec
Going back to repeated strings we find that ``HMF''=``in\_'' appears
in a number of places and so it is likely that \bc F=g. \ec Finally,
we know ``a'' should be represented by a common letter and the only
really common cipher letter that is not used is ``A'' so \bc A=a.\ec
At this point we have nine possible substitutions, \bc C=e, V=t,
G=h, R=r, H=i, T=s, M=n, F=g, and A=a, \ec which we have some
confidence in. Now we need to write out lines of the message filling
in what we have and looking for words we can recognize. As a result
we find:

Now the only letters left to figure out are ``P'' and ``X.'' Looking
for ``P's'' we see that there are only two and they are both
followed by ``W''=``u,'' so it looks like \bc P=q \ec and this is
confirmed by \bc DRCPWCMYU = frequency. \ec Then scanning through
what we have for a message we see \bc XCRU = \_ery \ec and thus \bc
X=v \ec fills in our last unknown letter very nicely.\vsp{10}

The tables here are really for the first part of our analysis. The ``Frequency Analysis'' and ``Repeated Strings'' tables are for keeping track of the count of the letter frequencies and for making notes on which strings we come across most often. The contact table is used to make an accurate count of repeated digraphs (two letter combinations). The first letter goes on the right and the second along the top, the number of times the digraph appears is counted in the box where row and column intersect.

\section{Additive Ciphers}
\subsection{Introduction}
Additive ciphers, sometimes called shift ciphers, are a very old and simple form of encipherment.
The idea is to shift the alphabet along a fixed number of spaces to get the cipher alphabet, the
alphabet we use to make our message. So, for example, if we decide to use a shift of 3 a plaintext ``a'' would become a cipher text ``D'', plaintext ``b'' would become a cipher text ``E'', ``c'' becomes ``F'', ``d'' becomes ``G'' and so on. The complete cipher and plain text alphabets would look like this:\vsp{10}

So, enciphering ``hello world'' we get ``KHOOR ZRUOG'' and if we decipher ``JRRG MRE'' we get ``good job.''\footnote{Notice that here we are using, and we will continue to use the convention that plain text is written in lower case and cipher text is written in upper case.}
A mathematical way of looking at this type of cipher is to change each character to a number

then think of the shift by 3 spaces as adding three to each number to get

(notice that when you go beyond 26 you must wrap back around to the beginning) and finally change that number into the corresponding letter in the alphabet

which gives the set of pairs we have above. Deciphering is done the same way except you subtract 3 instead of adding.
On a final note shift ciphers are can very easy to analyze even with a small amount to information. This is because once you do a frequency count and have a guess at which cipher text letter represents plain text ``e'' that tells you the shift. For example if the frequency count tells you that ``e'' is represented by ``J'' then you know the shift is by 5 and then you can write down the alphabets and decipher the message.
