Noted by @tobyhodges that there are certain questions that come up repeatedly in discussion sessions (especially about how the checkout process works).

This was part of the reason I added material to the carpentries handbook.

@tobyhodges how would you like to address this issue, or would you like to leave it as a recommendation for the next committee chair?

A lot of the info required already exists in the handbook. Nevertheless, I believe that a short list of links to existing information, which discussion hosts could refer to easily, would be beneficial. This would also go into the handbook and I'm happy to prepare a PR. When I have done so, I'll put out a call for others to contribute additional points/links to that page.

To contribute a bit with this:

To all discussion sessions I point to

  1. Join slack and Mailing lists: https://docs.carpentries.org/topic_folders/communications/slack-and-email.html specially instructors mailing list and instructors channel
  2. The Carpentries handbook: https://docs.carpentries.org/index.html Would have probably an answer to any question
  3. Find other instructors in your country https://carpentries.org/instructors-map/

Also that checkout participants are always welcome to come back to discussion sessions, and when they feel they know a bit more about the Carpentries they are encouraged to become hosts.

Fewer times, but often enough people wanted to see the guidelines for checkout
https://carpentries.github.io/instructor-training/checkout/
and the rubric for teaching demos
https://carpentries.github.io/instructor-training/guide/index.html
