Breaking Footnotes Syntax

Thanks for all of your hard work! This package has been immensely helpful for me.

I'm using it to do academic writing, and I'm running into an issue. Placing something within square brackets within a footnote breaks the highlighting function. This happens to me occasionally when I'm quoting something in multiple languages within a footnote. See this image:

This isn't the worst thing in the world, but that highlighting is really helpful when I'm scanning the document. Some footnotes can get quite long, and when they just blend in with the paragraph, it looks like a wall of text.
