I strongly suggest starting HyperHDR from the menu (or adding it to User Autostart). The Wayland / pipewire grabber is different from the x11 or framegrabber: there is a very strong security approach when creating sessions, which is failing for you. Usually, you will be asked to grant HyperHDR the screen capture permission and need to select the display to capture. This system dialog is handled automatically by portal routines when HyperHDR tries to create a capture session. I tested it few months ago on Arch with gnome and it worked fine. The portal implementation may vary depending on the desktop environment: for example for KDE it's a completely different development branch. |

Portal is only 'frontend' for Pipewire that helps to create a capturing session. I think pipewire is capable of capturing x11 session also. |

I started HyperHDR from the menu and still got the message: "In order to use the 'pipewire/portal' system grabber HyperHDR must be run as the application, launching as a service/daemon will fail". Does the user need any special access rights? Thanks. |

If your are meaning the warning on the HyperHDR grabbers page, it's a static text only. No other rights are required as far I know, portal should handle all the necessary actions. But as I mentioned portal is a abstraction layer, each desktop must implement it by its own and some implementations are behind the official upstream. |

I installed KDE Wayland support (sudo apt install plasma-workspace-wayland) and enabled it during log-in. Now a pop-up comes when activating the grabber and HyperHDR works as expected. But still too many downsides on Wayland. Need to re-think, what Linux distribution to use. |

BTW If you want to use x11 grabber on x11 system with portal libraries installed, you can try to remove all libsmartPipewire.so.* files from /usr/share/hyperhdr/lib folder. This should force HyperHDR to give up trying to use the portal grabber, but I haven't tested it. |

In parallel I installed Ubuntu 22.04 (Gnome) and the Wayland support is much more advanced. Actually, it is the default. Using HyperHDR with the Pipewire grabber a pop-up occurs, where you also could flag to remember the confirmation, which was not the case under KDE (Kubuntu). The Pipewire grabber in Ubuntu works under Wayland and X11, but.... not in fullscreen mode (VLC, Kodi). As soon as you have a frontend overlay on the video the grabber sends a screenshot. Now to your dirty hack (remove all libsmartPipewire.so.* files from /usr/share/hyperhdr/lib). That works pretty well under Ubuntu x11. It is then using the x11 grabber. So, for me I am fine so far with the solution. For future releases it may be an option to let the user force x11 grabber or make Pipepwire work for fullscreen applications. Thanks |

So KDE portal implementation "lies" about supporting Portal protocol version 4. It's version 3 at most, as I remember it was way behind the Gnome implementation which was used during developing. And if that library reports supported methods correctly, then HyperHDR would try to fallback to x11 grabber if it's possible because it checks protocol version ... but in this case adding a switch to force x11 grabber probably is necessary.
I think it's possible to extend pipewire grabber and capture a screen also in such scenarios. Work is in progress. |

I tested it again with Pipewire grabber under X11 and grabbing of fullscreen applications does not work. It is also related to the Kodi interface itself, not only to videos planning. For videos I also deactivated the hardware accelaration with the same result. |

OK, you tested X11 and I tested Wayland in fullscreen including VLC playing ;) I'm not saying that there is no problem but if the Pipewire breaks at some point and there is no warning from HyperHDR side in logs, it should be reported directly to the Pipewire project itself and ask for the explanation/investigation. X11 project was put in the maintenance state some time ago and it affects the situation more and more with time including applications development and video graphic drivers (now focusing on the Wayland, even NVidia gave up). Pipewire has some known minor bugs, for example screen saver (monitor power off) could pause the stream and it won't resume by itself again but it must be resolved by them. |

I am happy so far with X11 and the workaround of deleting the pipewire libs from /usr/share/hyperhdr/lib. Once Wayland has overcome its child deseases (e.g. no auto-refresh rate in Kodi) I will change over. |
