MITK-GEM future releases #51

Hello,
Following the FEZ workshop I wanted to ask to the MITK-GEM developers if there is any future release of the software planned. I am asking this in the perspective of adopting the software for our finite element workflows and student projects: the software and its features look great but without future public updates or releases it is difficult to plan a long-term use.
Thank you,
Luca

Hello Luca,
Sorry, your message fell through the cracks. I am guessing you made your decision already.

At this point, there are no plans for future releases, mostly do to lack of time and resources.

A good first step would be to port to the newest MITK version, which I believe supports all operating systems again. Second, re-evaluation of how to setup the application would be needed, e.g. plugins to MITK workbench vs not using MITK workbench.

I'd be happy to chat more, if you would like to help.

Cheers,
Yves

Hi Yves,
no worries, it was not an urgent request and thank you for your reply. I am not an expert in building this kind of applications, so I am not sure I would be able to make the upgrade myself, but someone in my team might be able to. When you propose to evaluate MITK workbench, are you hinting to potentially change the GUI/interface of the application?
Cheers,
Luca

I am not an expert either!

To port it to the newest MITK version, there are some fundamental changes to the plugin system between the versions, if I recall correctly. @araex looked into this a bit. As a result, it might be that doing step one (porting to newest MITK) might be more work than anticipated.

Since more work has to be put in, he suggested thinking about re-designing the app without using MITK workbench and plugins. The advantage being a more tailored GUI without the workbench/plugin overhead. The disadvantage being that other workbench features, i.e. other plugins, would have to be incorporated into the new app as well, if desired.

In regards to these tools, there are two schools of thought:

  1. One application enables multiple workflows (through plugins) -> current MITK-GEM philosophy
  2. One application enables one workflow -> idea of the re-design

I think it would still be valuable to try and port it to newest MITK version. I believe the Python plugin is now much better, which would be fun to have available.
