screen freeze but game is still running

Description

I don't know what's causing this to happen, but it has already happened 4 times so far. It looks like a game freeze, but I can still hear the game running.
first time I was opening my inventory while starving to death. the screen froze but could hear my character taking damage. the second time was when I was swimming while hunting fish with a spear. managed to save and quit after blindly clicking around for the button. the third time I was just about to do some clay forming. and this last time when I was loading the world to remember the 3rd, the screen froze right on the loading screen.

edit: its now happening every time I start the game, and it's not limited to the game anymore. it's started freezing on the title screen now

I have had something similar happen about a dozen times on occasion when doing random things near my base. I looked at the logs and I couldn't find anything about what was happening. I was running the most recent version, SP, on Steam Deck. It seems to have stopped happening, but I don't know why it happened.

I did not mean to do that and can't undo it

but I managed to delay the freezes by running dell support assist. It still happens but its not freezing every time I open the game.
