Description

When placing an item that can be stored on the ground (tried it with fired crocks, bowls, and pieces of fat) inside a storage vessel, chest, or reed chest attached to a boat, then taking it out again and placing it on the ground, the item will occasionally visually disappear and bug out.

The item is now invisible. It can still be picked up and placed down again in another spot, although it will remain invisible.
Other items placed in the same ground storage space will become invisible as well.
Fired crocks with meals inside cannot be interacted with anymore, for example with an empty bowl to retrieve food.
When removing all the items from the ground storage space, it will leave behind an unbreakable "Empty pile" block with collision.

How to reproduce

  1. Put a storage container on a boat (reed chest, chest, and storage vessel all resulted in the bug on my end)
  2. Place a crock in the container
  3. Close the container menu
  4. Open the container again, retrieve the crock
  5. Place the crock on the ground
  6. If the bug does not appear, try steps 2-5 again. Sometimes I needed two or three tries to reproduce the bug.

This happens in pre.6 as well. Sometimes the item is "duplicated", where it will show up in the boat storage item as well as back in the player's inventory. In those cases, the item in the player's inventory seems to work as expected when subsequently placed, but attempts to stack that item with the one in the boat storage, or attempts to retrieve the item from boat storage and then placing it cause the condition reported by this bugreport.

In addition to everything I included in my report, #4886, when the server is shut down and reopened, the previously "phantom" crock became "real" in my inventory. However, when Aramil placed a "phantom" crock on the ground, and the server was closed, the phantom crock disappeared upon reloading the world. Additionally, a random "sludgy gravel" block appeared in the testing chest on the sailboat for the host (me), but doesn't exist for Aramil. I placed a new (untested) meal crock in the same testing chest, and it appeared for me, but not for Aramil.

I then took that same crock, moved it into a "new" chest next to the previous chest, which already contained a basalt rock, and what appeared for Aramil was sludgy gravel, in a different position, instead of the meal crock that I had placed there. When I opened the chest, I saw the basalt rock and the crock. I closed the chest, and Aramil opened it and removed the sludgy gravel and moved the basalt rock to a different slot. When I opened it, the basalt rock and sludgy gravel both appear and in the positions that they were in for Aramil originally. Further interaction with the items within the chest (not removing anything) did not change what appeared for us individually, and we both showed mismatched chest contents.

Actually, follow these steps with any item, not just crocks, and it will create the phantom objects just the same. We were able to replicate with polished basalt rocks, as well, creating phantom rocks, as well as having rocks just simply "disappear," presumably teleported somewhere else.

This also happens with the armor stands.
