The limitations of Tails are becoming apparent.

Pros:

  • tamper resistance
  • friendly interface to manage persistent storage

Cons:

  • Tor connectivity is unreliable [EDIT: seems better these days]
  • Tor makes sending legitimate emails almost impossible [EDIT: fixed since ae0fac9]
  • Tor raises unnecessary suspicion
  • installation of additional software is clunky
  • no native backup facility (hence tails-clone-persistent) [EDIT: fixed since Tails 4.14]

The use of Tor is unnecessary for frith, so we should seriously consider moving to another base OS. Options include:

On the other hand, Tails 5.0 and above ships Kleopatra, so if we want to stick with Tails should we port Frith functionality into upstream Kleopatra instead? Pity Kleopatra is written in C++...
