Hello !
I asked the same question in the Optiboot forum, but here there is definitely more conversation and the forum is alive.
Since Arduino supports SingleWireSerial it is possible to use UART communication in a single wire. Is it possible to create an Optiboot fork using only one line (half-duplex) for programming ?
Technically, it is described quite well here: One Line Only
