and is due to the MultiViews feature of Apache.
I tried the SO recommended approach (putting Options -MultiViews into the .htaccess file) but it is not working, (as with a number of emulated Apache features on Hawkhost).
Proposal - add MYNG documentation about this.

Calls to a script that are appended with a segment, such as

ignore everything after .php .
