I tried both the official release appimage and the -dev-daily appimage one.
None can open this h.264/aac video here (the 15 sec one):
https://samplelib.com/sample-mp4.html
I'm using Linux Mint 22. I get the error message from openshot that
this is not a valid video/audio or image. Kdenlive and shotcut work fine. I also installed ffmpeg, as you can see at the end of the log, but that didn't fix anything.

Steps to reproduce the behavior:
Open the file linked above.

Expected behavior
To support the file and show it.

I fixed my issue by installing openshot via flathub.

Hello @M0n7y5 Can you verify which version of OpenShot you are running when you installed it via flathub?

I am using version 3.1.1

I reported this bug report on the latest stable, 3.2.1, and the dev-build. Please let's focus on this bug report, because you are polluting the report with off topic things. I reported a bug on the .appimage of the latest version, and you report either flatpaks, or the fact that you can preview them, but can't add them in the timeline (which is different to what I'm reporting, a different bug).

Hello @eugenialoli I am running Linux Mint 21.3 as a guest operating system in an Oracle Virtualbox environment (my host is Windows 11 Pro). I am running v3.2.1 AppImage (the latest stable release and not the daily build).

I downloaded all 5 sample files. I imported them into OpenShot without any issues. I am able to preview them, edit them, and export them.

Yesterday a new daily build was released for better support for newer versions of FFmpeg (I don't what version you were running before you upgraded to a newer version of FFmpeg). It might be worth downloading this latest dev daily build and give it a try: openshot.org/download/#daily.

Update: Running "FFmpeg -version" reports 4.4.2-0ubuntu.22.04.1

Hello @eugenialoli Did you get a chance to download the latest dev daily build AppImage and give it a try?

Hi @Colorjet3 sorry for the late reply, I was away this week. So I just downloaded the Sept 12 dev-build and I get the same error message as before.

It's something in the appimage, i got it too, but the official version from the ppa works...
Some library in the appimage doesn't work...

So, I did a bit more testing.
I have two similar DELL laptops, 3150 and 3190. Both run Linux Mint 22, both upgraded from 21.3. On the 3150, Openshot works, it loads the videos! On the 3190, it doesn't (as described in this bug report). I have mostly the same apps installed, so I'm not sure what's the difference. What makes Openshot not wanting to work properly on one, but working on the other!

However, I should mention that on the laptop that videos do work, it loads very slowly (it takes a solid 12-15 seconds to load). On the laptop that the videos don't work, it loads a bit faster (after having taken into account their hw speed difference).

Hello @eugenialoli
Please give the latest dev daily build AppImage a try. Lots of bug fixes and enhancements in this version. You can find it at openshot.org/download/#daily.

Unfortunately it still doesn't work. I get this in the terminal: "WARNING files_model: Failed to import /home/eugenia/Videos/sample-15s.mp4: No Reader has been initialized for this Clip. Call Reader(*reader) before calling this method."

Also, on the opening file dialog, the /home/user/Videos does not show up at all. I have to navigate all the way from / to find the file, each time...

  1. Are you also having the same import issue with 3.2.1?
  2. Is 3.2.1 available via flathub? Have you tried installing 3.2.1?

Hello @eugenialoli.

  1. I have Mint running in a Virtual environment as a guest. My host is Windows 11 Pro. When I test in Linux Min using the AppImage I have no issues with any of the sample files from the link you provided. I downloaded the 5-30 seconds samples and imported all of them. They all preview just fine both via the Right Click "Preview File" from withing the Project File window and when I drag them to the Timeline.

I don't have a computer where I can run Linux Mint to test so it may be hardware related.

I have assigned this to the lead developer for his review and input.

  1. I am not clear on your 2nd issue: "Also, on the opening file dialog, the /home/user/Videos does not show up at all. I have to navigate all the way from / to find the file, each time...". Please provide me with step-by-step as to what you are doing and what is happening or not happening and I can see if I can replicate it.

  1. As I mentioned in a reply above, I have two Mint laptops, both upgraded from 21.3. One works, and one doesn't. And I can't figure out why it doesn't work on one of them, because they're almost the same.

For the 2. issue, I just don't see /home/eugenia/Videos/ in the list on the left, when I try to open a video. I have to navigate all the way from /
