OP-TEE does not support 970 for the moment, and I don't think hikey960.xml will work. Some changes are certainly needed in optee_os at least (I expect minor changes to the address layout essentially).
That being said, and assuming 970 works the same as 960, there is no risk of actually "bricking" the board. It will likely happen that the board won't boot but assuming there is a "recovery" mode over USB like the 960 has, then you can always re-flash a valid firmware.
There is only a hikey960.xml present, but not one fo the hikey970.
Can I safely use the 960 one for the 970?
Not that I brick my board ...
